Theatre Unit Manager

The Team Leader will render and promote cost effective, safe quality patient care in accordance to hospital standards and policies. The objective of this position is to act as a clinical resource and leader in this speciality, performing functions at an advanced level of competence and consistence. Sound and contemporary knowledge of the area of speciality, together with an advanced understanding of professional nursing, health care delivery and programme planning, will allow the incumbent to fulfil his/her primary responsibilities and promoting quality patient care.

1. Operational Support

  • Assist the Theatre Manager in the day-to-day coordination of theatre activities to ensure smooth and efficient workflow

2. Staff Supervision & Leadership

  • Provide on-the-floor leadership, guidance, and mentorship to theatre staff, promoting a culture of teamwork, accountability, and excellence in patient care

3. Clinical Quality & Patient Safety

  • Ensure adherence to infection control policies, sterilisation standards, and clinical safety protocols, implementation of quality improvement initiatives

4. Communication & Engagement

  • Act as a liaison between theatre staff, surgeons, anaesthetists, and other multidisciplinary teams. Timely and effective communication of updates, changes, and expectations to all relevant stakeholders

5. Administration & Reporting

  • Assist with theatre utilisation data, equipment usage, and operational reporting for management review. Maintain accurate documentation related to surgical procedures, staffing, and any deviations from standard processes
  • Support the Theatre Manager in preparing for audits, inspections, and departmental meetings

Other Requirements:

  • A relevant nursing qualification (Diploma in General Nursing/ B Cur Degree) or equivalent NQF 7 qualification
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse
  • Compliance with the SANC code for a Registered Nurse and all applicable health care legislation
  • Post basic qualification in Theatre will be an advantage

  • At least five (5) years relevant experience in a Hospital Environment
  • Relevant experience in theatre is essential

  • Computer Literacy essential 
  • Capacity to implement and maintain standards of health practice required from all accredited bodies and appropriate health legislation
