At Busamed, we believe in delivering care that goes beyond the clinical care that sees the whole person. We are seeking a compassionate, qualified Social Worker to join our dynamic team on a part-time basis. This role is integral to supporting the emotional, social, and practical needs of our patients and their families, while also promoting the well-being among our healthcare professionals. The Social Worker is responsible to provide psychosocial support to patients and their families, ensuring their emotional and social needs are met during hospitalization and transition of care. The Social Worker will also support healthcare staff, helping to reduce burnout and improve morale through immediate access to psychosocial assistance.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments for patients and families
Offer therapeutic counselling and support to individuals coping with illness, trauma, or loss
Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop and implement safe discharge and transitional care plans
Coordinate referrals to rehabilitation centres, home-based care, or retirement villages
Provide crisis intervention in cases involving abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or mental health emergencies
Advocate for vulnerable patients and assist with accessing social grants, legal aid, housing, and other resources
Participate in ward rounds, interdisciplinary meetings, and care planning discussions
Maintain accurate, confidential documentation and submit required reports for legal, medical, or safeguarding purposes
Offer bereavement and palliative care support to families facing end-of-life decisions or grieving a loss
Facilitate discussions around advanced care planning and funeral arrangements
Conduct educational sessions for patients, families, and staff on mental health and trauma-informed care
Participate in wellness programmes and community outreach initiatives
Provide staff support to promote emotional well-being, reduce absenteeism, and improve team morale
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) from a recognised institution
Registered with SACSSP (South African Council for Social Service Professions)
Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience, preferably in a hospital or healthcare setting
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to manage emotionally complex situations with empathy and professionalism
Proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic patient management systems
